Trustee Profiles

There are a total of eight Trustees who represent different specialist areas for the benefit of the long term future of the R.Tucker Thompson. The inaugral Trustees from left to right were Mike Simm, Kim Borgstrom, Ian (Box) Milestone, Ngahau Davies (resigned), John Duder. Kneeling are Russell Harris and Kate Martin, Bronwyn Hunt (not pictured) and Mariao Hohaia (not pictured).

Joachim (Kim) Borgstrom
Kim has a huge amount of sailing experience on the New Zealand coast and offshore, both on the R.Tucker Thompson as deckhand, first mate and subsequently master, plus a variety of other sailing vessels. He and his wife Greta, former builder and owner of the R.Tucker Thompson, operate Fairwind Sailing Charters from Opua.

Michael Walter Daniel (Chair)
Mike W Daniel B.Com.Ec was appointed to the Board on 19 th June 2009 and invited to be Chair. A former stockbroker and merchant banker he has held Directorships with the following organisations: GSB Supply Corp Ltd, Force Corporation Ltd, Northland Health Ltd, Northpower Limited, SKYCITY Leisure Limited, Elders Norstock Limited (Chairman) and Northland Port Corporation Limited (Chairman) He is presently a Director of Airwork NZ Limited and Pan Pacific Petroleum NZ Limited. He also a keen surfer and enjoys golf.

John Nelson Duder
John is a civil engineer by trade but has had a long association with Sail Training and its effect on young people through 31 years' involvement with the sail training vessel Spirit of New Zealand and as Trustee on the Spirit of Adventure Trust.

Russell Dixon Harris
Builder, Master and previous owner of the R.Tucker Thompson, Russell continues to play an integral part in the Tucker and her ongoing adventures. Russell, his children and grandchildren will always contine to have an involvement with the ship. Prior to becoming involved with the Tucker, Russell was a farmer from Dargaville for a number of years.

Mariao Tehuranga Hohaia
Mariao's background is in the Arts and working with youth. Of Ngati Rehia and Ngati Kura descent, Mariao is passionate about the Peiwhairangi coastline. He is currently employed by Ngapuhi Iwi Social Services to deliver programmes for youth. Mariao has placed youth on,and participated in, youth trips run by the Tucker in the past. 

Bronwyn Hunt
Bronwyn is the Strategic Planning Mananager for Te Runanga o Te Rarawa. Her involvement with the Tucker came about initially when her son Manton was employed as a deck hand.  Bronwyn spends time onboard as crew at least once a year on a youth sail training voyage.  Her other community involvements include being on the Board of Trustees of Bay of Islands College and a member for Mid- North Lions. Bronwyn's biggest challenge for herself for the upcoming season is to move out of the galley and up on deck!

Ian (Box) Milestone
Box has been involved with the Tucker from the very beginning, including building of the ship, which was carried out at Mangawhai adjacent to his property. A project manager by trade, Box has spent a number of years involved in projects rebuilding Afghanistan. He has done a number of offshore voyages on the ship, including her inaugral trip to the UK in 1987.

Michael Wallace Simm
Mike is a professional company director and was executive director of Fullers Bay of Islands from 1984 to 2001 and a director for the NZ Tourism Board from 1997 to 2000. He is currently chair of Enterprise Northland, deputy chair of the Top Energy Group, and chairman of several other private companies, mainly tourism-related. During his time at Fullers he was responsible for promoting the R.Tucker Thompson's day sails to the international market.
