Sail Training Trust

About the Trust

The R.Tucker Thompson was originally owned in partnership by Tod Thompson (Tucker's son), Greta Simmonds and Russell Harris until 1992, when Russell purchased Tod and Greta's shares in the ship.

Since 1992, the ship has been held in private ownership by Russell Harris who, with his two children Melanie and Evan, and friend Rodger Girven (married to Greta's sister), operated and maintained the ship ... with the assistance of numerous deckhands over the years.

On reaching retirement age, it was necessary for Russell to make plans for the long term future of the ship. Around the world, very few tall ships are held in private ownership and many are operated by not-for-profit trusts. It was therefore decided to protect the future of the R. Tucker Thompson, a Northland icon, by transfering her into a Trust for the benefit of the people of Te Tai Tokerau Northland. Russell still remains involved with the ship as one of her Trustees and continues to provide invaluable advice and assistance.

The ship is now operated as a not-for-profit charitable trust, with all income derived from sailing activities used for her maintenance, as well as providing a contribution forNorthland youth sail training trips.

In this way, the ship can continue to provide pleasure and learning to people of all ages; young and old, Maori and Pakeha, visitors and Northlanders alike.
